Allie Mims, Miss Teen Alabama, will join us to sing and to speak about the powerful work that she is undertaking from her platform as Miss Teen Alabama. Mims created an organization called Joyful Noise several years ago, and last year it became an official 501(c)3 nonprofit. The Joyful Noise Foundation raises money to put musical instruments in special needs classes. According to Mims, about 75% of schools in Alabama do not offer music education to special needs students. “That genuinely breaks my heart,” she said. And she’s doing something about it. Her foundation has already raised enough money to donate musical instruments for special needs students at more than 20 schools.

A meal for this luncheon is available by RSVP. Please use the link below to RSVP by Sunday, Sept. 8th.

THRIVE LUNCHEON

TUESDAY, FEB. 13

11:30 AM

MT LAUREL WORSHIP ROOM

Join us on Tuesday, Feb. 13, for our first Thrive Ministry luncheon and performance by Ali Mims. She is currently a sophomore at Chelsea High School and will be singing and presenting the heart of her musical foundation, which ministers to and teaches special needs children.

Ali recently hosted a talent show (held at DOCC) to raise money for the purchase of instruments for students with disabilities. Forty students participated in the first annual talent show and it raised thousands of dollars to purchase instruments for the special needs class at Mt Laurel Elementary School. The money was also used to send instruments to students at Amigos Academy in Nicaragua who needed instruments in order to have music classes. Ali has also authored a book titled “Make Music With Joy” which can be purchased on Amazon. She was able to donate her book to all of these students along with all of the instruments. Ali started a program almost two years ago called Joyful Noise. She advocates for students with special needs, who utilize instruments for music therapy.

Ali is active in the Miss America program and as such has competed and won the “Miss Hoover” title. She and her family attend Metro Church of God here in Birmingham where her mom serves as choir director for the great Metro Adult Choir. We have hosted her mom, Haley several times to sing in programs and special events for us at DOCC.

We eagerly invite you to come hear this talented and gifted young lady as she sings and tells us more about her foundation “Joyful Noise” that utilizes music to minister and teach special needs children in Shelby County. She will have her very own book, and coloring book available for viewing or purchasing at this event.

We would LOVE to see you all at our first Thrive Luncheon of 2024!

Dr. Bugg served Samford University music department for over 3 decades influencing students to develop and sharpen their vocal skills in preparation for successful careers in music and ministry. He joined Samford's faculty in 1977 and immediately became a fixture of Birmingham's arts community.

"For the past three decades Dr. Bill Bugg has represented Samford University on stages from Brock Hall to Carnegie Hall," said School of the Arts dean Joseph Hopkins. "As director of Samford Opera and as a leading figure in the National Opera Association, he has made an impact on the art of opera in Birmingham and across our country". Dr. Bugg’s talent and his charisma will steal your heart and remind you of all that is beautiful, wonderful and precious in life!
